Chapter 1Verse 34 of 47

Bhagavad Gita 1.34

आचार्याः पितरः पुत्रास्तथैव च पितामहाः । मातुलाः श्वशुराः पौत्राः श्यालाः सम्बन्धिनस्तथा ॥

ācāryāḥ pitaraḥ putrās tathaiva ca pitāmahāḥ | mātulāḥ śvaśurāḥ pautrāḥ śyālāḥ sambandhinas tathā ||

Translation

Teachers, fathers, sons, and likewise grandfathers; maternal uncles, fathers-in-law, grandsons, brothers-in-law, and other kinsmen.

The list from 1.26, repeated. Same nine roles, slightly different order. Arjuna catalogs them again as if hearing the list a second time will reveal a name he could exempt. None can be exempted. The repetition is the work of a mind cycling, looking for the loophole in its own recitation. Notice that the list itself has become the argument. He no longer needs a conclusion. The list is the conclusion.

Reflection

What list are you running again today, hoping for a different answer?
