Translation
The Deity said: To you who do not cavil, I will now declare this most secret knowledge, together with its realization, knowing which you will be released from evil.
Reflection
What teaching are you not yet ready to hold?
Read this verse in its chapter: Chapter Nine
Krishna opens the chapter by naming what He is about to give. The most secret knowledge, joined with realization, that releases the listener from evil. He notes the precondition. He is speaking to one who does not cavil. The teaching is not withheld from the worthy and lavished on the curious. It is given to the listener who has stopped picking at the speaker. Arjuna has earned this position over eight chapters of patient asking. The new material is not new because something was hidden. It is new because the listener is now ready to hold it. Knowledge alone is named, then knowledge together with realization. The pairing matters. Doctrine carried by the mouth without going through the life is half the gift.
