Chapter 18Verse 1 of 78

Bhagavad Gita 18.1

अर्जुन उवाच । सन्न्यासस्य महाबाहो तत्त्वमिच्छामि वेदितुम् । त्यागस्य च हृषीकेश पृथक्केशिनिषूदन ॥

arjuna uvāca: sannyāsasya mahā-bāho tattvam icchāmi veditum / tyāgasya ca hṛṣīkeśa pṛthak keśi-niṣūdana

Translation

Arjuna said: Mighty-armed one, I wish to know the truth of renunciation, and of relinquishment, O Hrishikesha, O slayer of Keshin, each separately.

Arjuna ends as he began, asking. Two words have been used through the conversation that sound nearly the same and have not been told apart cleanly. Sannyasa, the laying down. Tyaga, the letting go. He wants them separated. Notice the maturity in the question. He is no longer asking whether to fight. He is asking for precision about how renunciation actually works. The teacher has poured eighteen chapters into him, and the student now wants the vocabulary clean before the closing. This last chapter will be that closing exam, conducted by Krishna himself, on every term that has been used.

Reflection

Where do you confuse laying down your post with letting go of its fruit?
