Chapter 1Verse 44 of 47

Bhagavad Gita 1.44

उत्सन्नकुलधर्माणां मनुष्याणां जनार्दन । नरके नियतं वासो भवतीत्यनुशुश्रुम ॥

utsanna-kula-dharmāṇāṃ manuṣyāṇāṃ janārdana | narake niyataṃ vāso bhavatīty anuśuśruma ||

Translation

O Janardana, we have heard that for the men whose family duties are destroyed, residence in hell is assured.

Anuśuśruma. We have heard. The argument arrives at appeal to tradition. This is what has been said to us by those before us. When an argument runs out of its own structure, it borrows authority from a source it cannot examine in the moment. Krishna, who has stayed quiet through forty-three verses, is being told what he is. The man holding the reins is also the one being argued at. A reader watching this is allowed to be patient. The reply is coming.

Reflection

Whose voice do you start quoting when you run out of your own argument?
