Chapter 11Verse 34 of 55

Bhagavad Gita 11.34

द्रोणं च भीष्मं च जयद्रथं च कर्णं तथान्यानपि योधवीरान् | मया हतांस्त्वं जहि मा व्यथिष्ठा युध्यस्व जेतासि रणे सपत्नान् ||

droṇaṁ ca bhīṣmaṁ ca jayadrathaṁ ca karṇaṁ tathānyān api yodha-vīrān | mayā hatāṁs tvaṁ jahi mā vyathiṣṭhā yudhyasva jetāsi raṇe sapatnān ||

Translation

Drona, Bhishma, Jayadratha, and Karna, as well as the other heroes of warriors, who have been slain by me, slay them. Be not troubled. Fight. You shall conquer your rivals in battle.

Drona, Bhishma, Jayadratha, Karna, and the other heroic warriors too, who have been slain by me, slay them. Be not troubled. Fight. You shall conquer your rivals in battle. Maya hatans tvam jahi, slay those slain by me. The phrasing is exact. The slaying has happened. Arjuna's act is a second slaying that follows the first. Ma vyathishthah, do not be agitated. Yudhyasva, fight. Jetasi rane sapatnan, you will conquer your rivals in battle. The names matter. These are the people whose deaths grieve Arjuna most. Krishna names them by name to leave no room for Arjuna to claim some other duty toward them. The vision has done its work. The instruction repeats with full clarity. The next verse will return to Arjuna's response.

Reflection

What duty looks unbearable until you stop being the one who originates its outcome?
