Chapter 11Verse 52 of 55

Bhagavad Gita 11.52

श्रीभगवानुवाच | सुदुर्दर्शमिदं रूपं दृष्टवानसि यन्मम | देवा अप्यस्य रूपस्य नित्यं दर्शनकाङ्क्षिणः ||

śrī-bhagavān uvāca | su-durdarśam idaṁ rūpaṁ dṛṣṭavān asi yan mama | devā apy asya rūpasya nityaṁ darśana-kāṅkṣiṇaḥ ||

Translation

The Deity said: This form of mine which you have seen is very difficult to see. Even the gods are constantly desirous of beholding this form.

The Deity said: This form of mine that you have seen is exceedingly hard to see. Even the gods are constantly longing for the sight of this form. Su-durdarsham idam rupam drishtavan asi yan mama. The teaching closes by naming the value of what was given. The very gods, who have not seen it, long for it. Nityam darshana-kankshinah, constantly desirous of the sight. The verse places the rarity of Arjuna's gift on the highest scale. It also opens a door for the listener, since if the gods long for it, the longing itself is a real path. The chapter is now turning from the recipient to the readers it will have. Whoever now hears this verse stands in the position of the gods who long.

Reflection

What longing of yours is itself the start of a true path, not a sign you are off it?
