Chapter 16Verse 24 of 24

Bhagavad Gita 16.24

तस्माच्छास्त्रं प्रमाणं ते कार्याकार्यव्यवस्थितौ । ज्ञात्वा शास्त्रविधानोक्तं कर्म कर्तुमिहार्हसि ॥

tasmāc chāstraṁ pramāṇaṁ te kāryākārya-vyavasthitau jñātvā śāstra-vidhānoktaṁ karma kartum ihārhasi

Translation

Therefore let scripture be your authority in deciding what to do and what not to do. Knowing what is declared by the ordinance of scripture, you should perform action here.

Closing instruction. Tasmat shastram pramanam te karya-akarya-vyavasthitau: therefore let shastra be your authority in the settling of what should be done and what should not. Jnatva shastra-vidhanoktam karma kartum iharhasi: knowing what is declared by the shastra-vidhana, you ought to perform action here. The chapter that began with the daiva roster ends with the same practical pointer. Daivi sampad is not assembled by sentiment. It is assembled by acts performed in the light of scripture. The seeker is not asked to invent the path. The path has been given. The work is to learn it, accept its authority, and walk it. After the sober diagnosis of asuri, Krishna places the reins back in the seeker's hands. Take the reins.

Reflection

What received teaching will you take as authority this week, and where will you test obedience to it?
