Chapter 18Verse 6 of 78

Bhagavad Gita 18.6

एतान्यपि तु कर्माणि सङ्गं त्यक्त्वा फलानि च । कर्तव्यानीति मे पार्थ निश्चितं मतमुत्तमम् ॥

etāny api tu karmāṇi saṅgaṃ tyaktvā phalāni ca / kartavyānīti me pārtha niścitaṃ matam uttamam

Translation

But even these works are to be done after letting go of attachment and fruits. This, Partha, is my decided and highest view.

Watch the second move. Krishna has just said yajna, dana, tapas are not to be abandoned. Now he qualifies. Even these three, the holiest works in the tradition, are to be performed in a particular spirit, with sanga released and phala released. Otherwise sacrifice itself becomes a transaction, gift becomes a bid, austerity becomes spiritual currency. The form of right action does not save anyone from the motive of getting. This is the Gita's signature instruction, taught one more time near the close. Matam uttamam, he says, this is my highest considered view, settled, not provisional. The reader is being asked to register it as the chapter's anchor.

How does attachment leak into your most spiritual activities?
