Bhagavad Gita 2.17
अविनाशि तु तद्विद्धि येन सर्वमिदं ततम् । विनाशमव्ययस्यास्य न कश्चित्कर्तुमर्हति ॥
avināśi tu tad viddhi yena sarvam idaṃ tatam | vināśam avyayasyāsya na kaścit kartum arhati ||
Translation
Know that to be indestructible by which all this is pervaded. None can cause the destruction of this imperishable.

Read this verse in its chapter: Chapter Two
The first positive description of the atman. Tatam, spread through, pervading all this. The self does not sit inside the body the way water sits in a glass. It saturates whatever it shows up in. The Sanskrit verb is from √tan, to stretch out, the same root as tantra. Threaded through. The second half states the consequence: no one can destroy it, not because it has a strong defense, but because there is nothing to take hold of. Shankara reads avyayasya as "of the changeless" — what does not move under attack cannot be moved.
