Bhagavad Gita 6.36
असंयतात्मना योगो दुष्प्राप इति मे मतिः | वश्यात्मना तु यतता शक्योऽवाप्तुमुपायतः ||
asaṁyatātmanā yogo duṣprāpa iti me matiḥ | vaśyātmanā tu yatatā śakyo 'vāptum upāyataḥ ||
Translation
My opinion is that devotion is difficult to obtain by one who does not restrain his self. But by one who restrains his self and works hard, it may be obtained through proper expedients.
Reflection
What inner door have you been waiting for someone else to open that the verse says only you can open?
Read this verse in its chapter: Chapter Six
The verse divides the field into two cases. The man who has not begun to govern himself will find yoga out of reach. Not because the path is hidden from him, but because the door he has to walk through is inside him and he has not yet opened it. The other man, the one who governs himself and works, can reach yoga by the right means. The verse is not severe. It is descriptive. The work the chapter describes is the work that opens the door. There is no shortcut around the inner labour. There is also no obstacle once that labour is begun.
