Chapter 6Verse 41 of 47

Bhagavad Gita 6.41

प्राप्य पुण्यकृतां लोकानुषित्वा शाश्वतीः समाः | शुचीनां श्रीमतां गेहे योगभ्रष्टोऽभिजायते ||

prāpya puṇya-kṛtāṁ lokān uṣitvā śāśvatīḥ samāḥ | śucīnāṁ śrī-matāṁ gehe yoga-bhraṣṭo 'bhijāyate ||

Translation

Coming to the worlds of the meritorious, and dwelling there for many years, one who has fallen from devotion is born again in the family of pure and illustrious men.

The trajectory is given in two stages. The yogi who fell short does not vanish. He goes first to the worlds of those who have done well, and lives there long. Then, when that period is finished, he is born again, and the birth is favourable. The home he comes back to is pure and well-placed. Krishna is being concrete on purpose. The seeker is not asked to take the promise on faith alone. The next life of the half-finished practitioner is described almost as a route. Nothing he did on the path is wasted. It buys him conditions in which the path can be taken up again without starting from the cold ground.
