Chapter 7Verse 18 of 30

Bhagavad Gita 7.18

उदाराः सर्व एवैते ज्ञानी त्वात्मैव मे मतम् | आस्थितः स हि युक्तात्मा मामेवानुत्तमां गतिम् ||

udārāḥ sarva evaite jñānī tv ātmaiva me matam | āsthitaḥ sa hi yuktātmā mām evānuttamāṁ gatim ||

Translation

All these are noble. But the man of knowledge is deemed by me to be my own self. For with self devoted, he resorts to me alone as the highest goal.

All four are noble. But the jnani, Krishna says, is My own self. The phrase is striking and meant to be heard plainly. There is no distance left between Him and the man who has arrived at this knowing. The jnani has set himself toward Him as the highest goal, and the goal has come and met him there. This is what the chapter has been building toward. Knowledge with experience produces this. Not a worshipper who admires from across the room. A seeker who, by the slow work of turning, has become inseparable from the one he was turning toward.

Reflection

What part of you already feels less separate from what you have been turning toward?
