Chapter 8Verse 2 of 28

Bhagavad Gita 8.2

अधियज्ञः कथं कोऽत्र देहेऽस्मिन्मधुसूदन | प्रयाणकाले च कथं ज्ञेयोऽसि नियतात्मभिः ||

adhiyajñaḥ kathaṁ ko'tra dehe'smin madhusūdana | prayāṇa-kāle ca kathaṁ jñeyo'si niyatātmabhiḥ ||

Translation

Who, and how, is the adhiyajña here in this body, O destroyer of Madhu? And how, again, art thou to be known at the time of departure by those of self-restraint?

Two more questions complete the list. Who is the adhiyajna in this body, and how, at the time of departure, is He to be known by the self-restrained. The second is the practical one. Arjuna is asking about death, the moment when the long discipline either pays out or scatters. He is not asking idly. He has heard Krishna say at the close of the previous chapter that the man who knows Him does not lose the thread at the last breath. He wants to know what that knowing looks like in practice. The verse is the bridge into the heart of Chapter Eight, where the answer will be laid out with unusual precision.

Reflection

What about the moment of your own leaving would you most want to know?
