Chapter 1Verse 17 of 47

Bhagavad Gita 1.17

काश्यश्च परमेष्वासः शिखण्डी च महारथः । धृष्टद्युम्नो विराटश्च सात्यकिश्चापराजितः ॥

kāśyaś ca parameṣv-āsaḥ śikhaṇḍī ca mahā-rathaḥ | dhṛṣṭadyumno virāṭaś ca sātyakiś cāparājitaḥ ||

Translation

And the King of Kashi, a great archer, and Shikhandin, the great chariot-warrior; Dhrishtadyumna and Virata, and the unconquered Satyaki.

Shikhandin is named. The whole battle hinges on Shikhandin: Bhishma will not raise a weapon against him, because Shikhandin was born a woman, and that is the gap through which Bhishma will be killed. The fact is in the air the moment the name is sounded. Sometimes the most important detail in a paragraph is a name spoken without comment. The reader has to know the story for the name to land; the text trusts you to.
