Chapter 16Verse 6 of 24

Bhagavad Gita 16.6

द्वौ भूतसर्गौ लोकेऽस्मिन्दैव आसुर एव च । दैवो विस्तरशः प्रोक्त आसुरं पार्थ मे शृणु ॥

dvau bhūta-sargau loke 'smin daiva āsura eva ca daivo vistaraśaḥ prokta āsuraṁ pārtha me śṛṇu

Translation

Two kinds of beings exist in this world: the divine and the demonic. The divine has been described at length; hear now from Me, O Partha, of the demonic.

Krishna sets the frame for the long asuri portrait that follows. Two kinds of beings populate this world, daiva and asura. The divine roster has been spoken at length, vistarashah. Now hear the demonic, in equal detail. Notice the symmetry of the address. Krishna does not whisper the asuri portrait in a corner. He gives it weight. A clean map shows both terrains. Skip the demonic terrain and the seeker walks unprepared into its territory wearing daivi colors. The next fourteen verses are this map. They are unflinching. They are also strangely intimate. Read them with the question, where in me does this stir, even briefly? That question is the point of the verses Krishna is about to give.

Reflection

What does honest reading of the demonic map cost you, and what does it spare you?
